Costa Rica Beaches Playas del Coco
Playas del Coco is one of Costa Rica's oldest beach communities. Because of its proximity to Liberia it is very popular among both local and foreign tourists who flock to the beach for it's flourishing nightlife and abundance of daytime activities. There are no big resorts or luxury hotel chains in Playas del Coco, all the hotels are locally owned. The kid and adult friendly beach is a three kilometer stretch of of dark gold sand and is a safe for swimming. Only occasionally do the waves get big enough for surfing. The hills and mountains that surround the horseshoe shaped beach make for great viewing of the beach and the striking blue ocean.
The residents from Playas del Coco call themselves Coqueños. Especially in the weekends Coqueños love going to the beach with their families, hand line fishing, and playing rambunctious games of soccer. There is a wide array of locally owned sodas that serve delicious local staples such as Casados (a dish made with rice, beans, fried plantains and a protein), Arroz con Pollo (chicken and rice) as well as the ubiquitous licuados (blended fruit drinks) and of course Costa Rica's famed beer, Imperial.
